Um…you guys. Scotland was near the tail end of our last trip and might have been our new favorite. The natural beauty here was amazing. Our kids loved the endless fields of sheep and cows. They loved looking for Nessie in Loch Ness and hiking up extinct volcanoes. They loved Merida castles and Harry Potter and castle-themed playgrounds.

Scotland is small enough that you can use Edinburgh as a base and travel to the outlying areas on day trips. Edinburgh airport (EDI) is nice with easy public transportation access to downtown Edinburgh. There are plenty of easy direct trains (about 4 hours, there’s also a night train option) from London.

A few of our kids’ favorites:

Edinburgh – Fantastic newer city with castles, castle playgrounds, and great (FREE) kid-friendly museums

Loch Ness – Nessie, abandoned castles, Nessie, beautiful hikes with waterfalls…and did I say Nessie??

Glencoe Valley
